Heart Rate Step Test
The main purpose of a heart rate step test/talk test is to estimate what intensities an individual should be exercising at, using RPE (rate of perceived exertion), Heart rate, and the ability to talk. It is used to determine whether a person is exercising at a safe and appropriate intensity by evaluating how easily they can talk during physical activity. Heart rate for us is the most important metric you can use when running, this is because heart rate automatically reflects the many factors that influence your performance on any given day. Temperature, humidity, sleep quality, hydration, stress, accumulated fatigue, illness, altitude, and even nutrition can all affect how hard your body has to work during a run. By monitoring your heart rate, your training naturally adapts to these changes, ensuring you’re training at the intended intensity regardless of the conditions.
This is particularly important for aerobic development. Many runners unknowingly spend too much time training at moderate intensities, which can limit improvements and slow recovery. Heart rate training helps keep easy runs genuinely easy, allowing your body to build aerobic capacity and strengthen the cardiovascular system without creating unnecessary fatigue.
The test will include a short warm up, and then will slowly ramp up in steps every 5 minutes. We will use heart rate, RPE (Rate of perceived exertion) and also will talk to you during the test, often getting the individual doing the test to recite a song, or passage. From this we will gather all the information we need to provide an accurate set of heart rate results and ranges for you to work at during your training.
